Bare Root Apple trees = Field grown trees that have been freshly lifted and supplied with no soil around the roots. Only available during the dormant period November-April
10 or 12 Litre Apple trees = Container grown and can be planted all year round. The size refers to the number of litres of compost that the container holds. Freshly potted trees will not be rooted into the pot yet.
1 Year Maiden = A one year old tree and the size depends on the variety but in general they will be 125cm in height and will have some side branches.
2 Year Bush = A two year old tree that has been pruned back in the first winter to form a bush shape. Generally trees will be 140-160cm in height with multiple side branches. This height guide is an end of summer height.

3 Year Bush = A three year old tree that has been pruned to form a bush shape. Generally trees will be 140-160cm in height with multiple side branches. This height guide is an end of summer height.

2 Year Cordon = The term cordon simply refers to a single stem with short sideshoots (the fruiting spurs). This is usually trained angled to 45 degrees (oblique cordon), but can be trained singly vertically (also known as minarette)

2 Tier Espaliers -  The term espalier refers to the way fruit trees are trained to grow against a wall. It makes the tree easier to prune and the fruit easier to pick. This decorative method was often used in traditional walled kitchen gardens and is perfectly suited to growing fruit in the smaller garden.

Stepovers - Cultivated since Victorian times, they are basically one tier espaliers that are low enough to simply ‘step over’ where necessary. These are useful to define borders with. Their short stem and a horizontal branch look equally good in front of ornamental borders or vegetables.

Pollination Made Simple

Most suburban situations provide good pollen due to the close proximity of other gardens. It is not always necessary to have pollinators if the bees and other pollinating insects are generous with their visits. If you have no other Apple tree close by then select two varieties in the same group or the adjoining group ie group 2 and 4 will pollinate group 3 as will any others in group 3. Some varieties of Apples are self fertile. Pollination chart for apple trees

Bought a cordon version of sunset Apple - my second - to replace the one on M27 from three years ago... we basically killed it by planted it in the ground the year before last!! This cordon on M26 looked a lot sturdier when it arrived and was in flower within a month of arrival. The shape of the cordon was very well pruned. It has grown significantly since, and is now showing signs of growth again! Look forward to some lovely little sunset apples again this year. M26 is the way to go :)

I bought this apple variety in March 2016 from Blackmoor on M27 as a 2yr old tree. It has grown really well in a heavy clay soil over the last two years. In the very hot summer we had this year (2018) the fruits turned a beautiful luminous red colour. The tree has produced lots of lovely tasting apples. Very satisfied customer.

My Sunset apple cordon on M26 was delivered promptly and has thrived. The tree is a strong, healthy well shaped cordon. Never been disappointed by Blackmoor. Been using them for years.

Sunset Apple M26 arrived today. Lovely looking plant and extremely well packaged. Look forward to planting it tomorrow and watching it flourish.

Sunset apple in M27 bush form arrived very promptly alongside blueberry patriot. Both plants in splendid conditions. The apple is almost at maximum height at two years, which signals the growing conditions in the nursery is great I think. It is fair to say these plants are the best quality I have got, not only from online orders but also just generally speaking from anywhere. I believe Blackmoor look after the plants very well. Also have to say, I saw some of the same Sunset Apple plants with the Blackmoor tag in a few garden centres nearby, they were nowhere near as healthy-looking as the one arrived. Really look forward to watching it grow and hopefully there will be some fruits come the late summer. Highly recommend Blackmoor, I'll come back for me next summer.

Purchased an M26 2 year old bare root tree in March '15. It arrived in excellent condition and as advised I promptly planted it and it is now August '15 and a small crop of apple are developing after I heavily thinned it out so as to not overload it. But so far it is exceeding expectations!

Thank you for the lovely apple trees, and the quick despatch of my two orders. I now have four bush apple trees from Blackmoor, they are absolutely perfect, good shape with strong firm branches in all directions, full of healthy leaves, plenty of roots but not at all potbound. Both despatches were very quick, the plants spent less than 24 hours in their boxes, and arrived on the stated day each time. They are so much better than the straggly trees one sometimes finds in garden centres, there is no comparison between them and the quality plants from yourselves, obviously grown with light and space and not crowded together. I have every confidence they will settle quickly in my garden and I will be heeding the advice to remove the fruitlets after flowering in the first year, except for one or two left on - I just have to see at least one fruit from each of these excellent trees next year. A very happy customer, and will be again if a space miraculously appears in my garden for another fruit tree! The after care booklet is also very welcome, and I was glad to hear about Tree-Aid charity for Africa as well, a wonderful idea.

We're really pleased with this apple tree - a 2 year bush in a 10 litre pot, it was a very nice surprise to open the box and see so many leaves and little fruits on it, better than we could have hoped for!

When is the best time to plant a fruit tree - Container grown apple trees can be planted at any time of the year. Bare Root apple trees can only be planted between the months of November - April.

Planting distance for apple trees - All fruit trees are grafted onto a rootstock. It is the rootstock that determines how big the apple tree will grow into. There is a rootstock guide on the left hand side of all fruit tree product pages that explains this. As tall as the tree will grow into would be the planting distance. Example MM106 will grow to 3-4 metres when mature. So a spacing of between 3-4 metres would be required.
